Launching WebStart from Internet Explorer

These instructions configure Internet Explorer to launch WebStart.

System Prerequisite: The Java Development Kit (JDK) must be installed.

update: This lab assumes access to our NMS server via http://nextmidas.com, which is not currently available.
  1. Open Internet Explorer and go to a page with a link to a WebStart application (e.g., http://nextmidas.com/).
  2. Click on the WebStart application link.
  3. A "File Download" window asks if you wish to open or save the file. Verify that the box next to "Always ask before opening this type of file" is not selected, and then select "Open."
  4. In the "Open With..." window, select "Other...."
  5. Select the javaws (or javaws.exe) application (located in the $JAVAHOME\bin\javaws directory with Oracle Java 8), and click "Open." NOTE: IcedTea-Web also has open source versions of javaws for Java 8 and 11.
  6. Verify that the box next to "Always use this program to open these files" is selected, and then select "Ok."
