  • Definitions
    Java SE (Standard Edition)
Allows you to build and run Java applications (like NeXtMidas).
Commonly called the "Java Development Kit" or just "JDK".
Prior to the release of Java 5, this was called the "Java 2 Software Development Kit" or "J2SDK".
This includes the Java Runtime Environment (along with Java Web Start and the Java Plugin).
    Available from http://java.sun.com/
This is the one you want when using NeXtMidas!
    Java EE (Enterprise Edition)
A set of extension to Java SE to support enterprise service-oriented architectures (SOA).
    Java ME (Micro Edition)
The specialized version of Java used on mobile phones and the like.
    Java Runtime Environment
Allows you to run Java applications.
Includes Java Web Start and the Java Plugin.
    Available from http://www.java.com/
You can use this to run a NeXtMidas application via Java Web Startt.
    Java Web Start
Web Start is a tool for application distribution and version control.
See the WebStart module for details.
Don't Make This Mistake:
Many people make the mistake of thinking of Java EE (Enterprise Edition) as a "professional" version of Java. Java EE is just a set of "extensions" (i.e. "extra stuff") for use with Java SE.
